Introduction
Established in 1991 as the very first Department of Life Science in Taiwan, the Department offers a Bachelor of Science program in Biology, allowing students to explore various areas of biological sciences in an integrated yet diverse program built upon a solid foundation of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology. The Department provides a robust learning environment for students and focuses on providing them with superior knowledge, as well as the context in which to apply it. Students also undergo training in experimental techniques, with the purpose of engaging in basic and applied research. The Department is committed to nurturing expertise across academia and industry in the biological sciences, with solid employability, leadership, and an international outlook.
The Department of Life Science is home to some of Taiwan’s finest researchers and educators, all sharing the same passion for guiding undergraduate students through their advanced studies and helping them succeed. The undergraduate curriculum covers many aspects of biology, such as cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, physical biochemistry, bioinformatics, structural biology, genomics and proteomics. Advanced students may also register for graduate-level courses. The Department also encourages its students to actively engage in research, by conducting independent research projects in the laboratory of their choice. Students entering their senior year are encouraged to participate in summer research programs at outstanding laboratories abroad or to study abroad via short-term international student exchange programs.
